TAWAU: The Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China, Liang Caide, is encouraging more Chinese enterprises to invest in Tawau and participate in the construction of infrastructures to make Tawau a hub of cooperation and exchange between Malaysia, China and Indonesia.

Liang said Tawau’s strategic and economic status will become more prominent after Indonesia move its capital from Jakarta to East Kalimantan. To this, he urged entrepreneurs combine Chinese capital and technology with the resources and advantages that Tawau have.

He was speaking while attending the opening of Lantern Festival held at Sin Onn market here recently. The celebration was jointly organised by Assistant Minister to the Chiewf Minister-cum-Sri Tanjong Assemblyman Datuk Jimmy Wong’s office, Sri Tanjong community development unit, six-clan of Tawau (Hakka, Teo Chew, Sze Yip, Fook Chow, Hai Nam and Hokkien), Tawau Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Hap Seng Properties Development Sdn Bhd. Liang said the Mid-Autumn Festival is one of the biggest traditional festivals in China and it is a reunion day.

He said that despite being far from his homeland, the local Chinese community celebration of the festival made him feel like he is in his hometown.

“When I came to Sabah, what impressed me the most are the inheritance and love of Chinese culture in Sabah and I personally felt the persistence of Chinese community in inheriting and promoting Chinese traditional culture. Not only that, the vast majority of Chinese communities also look forward to the friendship of China-Malaysia.

In recent years, the economic and trade cooperation between China and Sabah has developed; however, in general, the economic and trade cooperation between the two countries has great potential and room for growth. There are many areas in which the two sides can cooperate, such as infrastructure construction, tourism, manufacturing and processing industries, and agricultural fisheries.

Tawau is the gateway to Sabah and has a unique geographical advantage. Tawau is rich in fishery resources, tiger shrimp and various fishes are exported to Asian countries. Tawau has a beautiful natural environment and unique tourism resources.

As the Indonesian government announces its move to Kalimantan, Tawau will be one of the closest cities to the Indonesian capital. Tawau’s strategy and economic status will become increasingly prominent.
