RM64,000 fags seized in Kalabakan
TAWAU: A total of 820 cartons of various brands of contraband cigarettes were discovered in a  Proton Perdana left by the roadside not far from the Kalabakan Road Check-Point, Monday.

General Operations Force Battalion 14 Commanding Officer, Supt Mustapha Othman said a 3am public tip-off prompted his team to inspect the vehicle which was found with its driver’s door open.

He said nobody was found in the car and efforts to trace the driver in the surrounding area was to no avail.  The team stumbled upon the contrabands worth about RM64,000 wrapped in black plastic in the vehicle’s front, back and bonnet. The seized items including the vehicle were brought to the Tawau police headquarters for further probe.

Meanwhile, five paperless men were seized for having a bakakuk (homemade rifle), a live bullet and a packet of syabu at Simpang Empat Mile 10, Kalabakan, Sunday.

Supt Mustapha said his Strike Force team made the arrest while on duty at the checkpoint at about 8pm.

The five men, aged between 26 and 41, on three motorcycles, were stopped for inspection by the team.  The live bullet and syabu was found in the sling bag of one of the men, called ‘Botak’.

The man subsequently led the team to an oil palm plantation not far from the area where the bakakuk was found.

The case was being investigated under Section 8 (a) of the Weapon Act 1960 for in possession of weapon without permit.
