KOTA KINABALU:  The Public Works Department (PWD) clarified that Jalan Penampang Lama will only be accessible to the public once the remaining slope rehabilitation work there is fully completed.

It first occurred during an incessant rain on Sept 9, 2017 and later on Jan 6, the following year, where it slid down again around 5pm during a rain storm.

A PWD spokesman, when contacted recently, regretted the inconveniences caused to road users due to the closure of the road.

“There were two landslides which occurred on this road, one was at Km2.3 and the other at Km2.1,” he said, adding that the Km2.3 was fully completed on April 26, this year.

He, however, said it could not allow the road for public use despite the completion of the work at Km2.3 as the slope at Km.2.1 is still under repair.

He said the Ministry of Finance has authorised the implementation of the slope repairs according to “Design and Build” method.

“The Letter of Intent (LOI) was issued on August 1 and a briefing with the contractor was held on August 5.

“A site visit was also conducted on August 6, this year,” he added.

He said the contractor was given two weeks to come up with a draft design proposal and the presentation of the concept design was done on Aug 15.

“The contractor must produce a detailed design and prepare the Bill of Quantities within two months from the date of the LOI before a Letter of Award can be issued,” he added.

A concerned road user, said he finds it inconvenient to take a detour from Taman Century to Koidupan Commercial Centre in order to get to Bundusan road.

“I want to know the progress of the hill slope repair as I noticed there is not much development at Kilometre 2.15 at the moment.

“The authority is urged to speed up the work so that an early completion date can be achieved to reconnect the collapsed section of the road.

“Those who live and work in this part of the city suburb know very well that this is an important road link,” Micah said,

He noticed the construction to rebuild the collapsed slope has been very slow lately.

“The government must understand that traffic sluggishness along Jalan Bundusan and Jalan Penampang can be minimised if this road is accessible to public use,” he said.
