KOTA KINABALU: A 41-year-old man was sentenced to 15 years’ jail for sexually abusing his granddaughter.

Sessions Court Judge Azreena Aziz handed the sentence to the man after ruling that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt on Tuesday.

The man was found guilty of committing the offence against the 13-year-old girl by touching her body at 6.45am on Dec 9, 2018 at a bedroom of a house in a residential area in Jalan Sepanggar, near here.

He was convicted under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 which carries a jail term of up to 20 years, and whipping, on conviction.

The prosecution had called six witnesses and only one defence was called by the defence during the hearing.

The court ordered the man to serve the jail sentence from the date of his arrest on Dec 9, 2018.

In the same court, four people were jailed four months each for entering the State illegally.

Three of the foreigners were also handed a stroke of the cane each after they pleaded guilty to entering the State without their valid documents.

The foreigners were arrested during separate operations conducted by the police after failing to produce their identification documents.

After completing their jail sentence, all of them were ordered to be referred to the Immigration Department.
