Bribery: NRD officers charged
TAWAU: Two National Registration Department (NRD) officers were charged with graft at the Special Corruption Court here Thursday for approving and processing the application for MyKads for twins, a boy and a girl, aged 12, in Semporna.

The two, Yuliana Saat, 42, and Azmi Amir Lunji, 44, who were NRD assistant registrars at the Semporna office, pleaded not guilty after they were separately charged before Judge Abu Bakar Manat on Thursday.

Yuliana was accused of seeking a RM2,000 bribe from one Sufiah Said on April 26,2017 at 5.30pm behind the Seri Cahaya Restoran in Taman Sempaul in Semporna.

The accused asked for the bribe to process Sufiah’s application to obtain MyKads for her twins, Nuraznil Ayub dan Nurazanah Ayub.

Azmi, through Yuliana, had also asked for RM2,000 bribe.

They were charged under Section 17(a) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009 for attempting to accept a bribe.

If found guilty, they could face a maximum jail term of not more than 20 years and fined five times the amount of the bribe or both.

Judge Abu Bakar allowed for a RM10,000 bail for each, with RM5,000 deposited with a local surety each. He fixed Nov 15 for mention and case management.

The two were ordered to report to the Tawau MACC office every two months and warned not to have any contact with prosecution witnesses.

Earlier, lawyers for the duo urged the court for a lower bail amount as both were government servants and it was the first time they had been charged in court.

Their lawyer also said that Yuliana, a mother of eight children, aged between one and 21, was not a flight risk.
