Ministry studying policy for data and artificial intelligence

KUALA LUMPUR: The Communications and Multimedia Ministry is studying a policy for data and artificial intelligence (AI) which play significant roles in the Industrial Revolution 4.0.
Its minister Gobind Singh Deo said Malaysia has the potential to be the centre for the Southeast Asia region, with focus on developing talents to increase knowledge about AI.

“This policy is a priority of my ministry. We are looking at formulating a data-and-AI policy. At an event like this, it brings stakeholders together and we get input from them as to what they are concerned about.
“We are now in the process of listening to input from all stakeholders, after that we will sit down and formulate (the) policy.
Once a policy is ready, then I will have to take to the Cabinet,” he told reporters after delivering his speech at the UNESCO Open Talks on Access to Information ‘Leaving No One Behind’ at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre here Thursday.
Earlier, Gobind launched the third Annual Next Big Tech Asia 2019 annual conference and exhibition on AI and Data where the biggest industry players from Forbes, Unesco and Air Asia shared their experiences and knowledge of the future and impact of AI and Big Data.

When asked when the policy will be announced, Gobind said he did not want to set a timeline and was not rushing into it, and stressed that the most important thing was the deep discussion how the policy could benefit the data and AI.
“As you know, technology develops day by day and it becomes more complex. The whole conversation about data and AI...perhaps in mid next year…I am not sure,” he added.

Meanwhile, commenting on the possibility of a potential postage hike by Pos Malaysia Bhd, Gobind said he would make an announcement soon, at least by the next session of parliament.
“We are looking at something but to be fair to them, there is a discussion and they (Pos) are supposes to share with me a report on this...once I get the report, I will hold a press conference and I will let you all know what the direction is,” he said adding that the matter will be finalised by the end of this year.
Recently, speculations were rife that Pos Malaysia would be increasing its postal tariff. The price of domestic stamps rose to 60 sen in 2010 and has been unchanged since.
