A resident in Sembulan is grateful to the City Hall for emptying the communal bin servicing the folks in Kampung Sembulan Lama on a daily basis but he is not in favour of mass dilapidated furniture being dumped next to the bin.

The complainant was shocked when he came across scores of household items dumped in the vicinity of the bin, recently.

“Who could have done that?” asked HASAN, whose house is located not far from the bin centre in that village.

He felt pity for the authority’s garbage collectors who had to put an extra effort in putting the furniture aside in order for them to pull the bin out to the road before transferring its content into their compactor.

“It slowed down the process of their work tremendously and at the same time affecting the smoothness of the traffic flow along that road as well,” he said.

In view of the narrow single-carriage road in that village, he also feared that the rejected furniture would scatter onto the driveway if the volume of such bulk waste increased later on.

“But I think it is better to throw them there rather than slyly dumping them into the nearby river which the authorities including the City Hall are striving to upkeep,” he said.

Hotline had approached the City Hall recently and its spokesman explained that the routine rubbish collection in that part of the city is on a daily basis. “Allow us time to investigate in order to determine who is the culprit who dumped the solid waste next to the bin,” its spokesman said.

He said it would clear the backlog of solid waste in that area after it had inspected the place. “Let this publication serves as a reminder to the individuals who threw the unwanted furniture there to stop doing that or face the consequences from us,” he added. Generally, he said it would entertain callers who requested the City Hall to remove their solid or bulk waste with a minimal fee.

“It all depends on the volume of the rubbish and other aspects as well,” he said, adding that fuel cost has to be factored in the fee as well. He advised members of the public who required more details about the matter to contact its staff at 244000 or 210011.   (OV)
