KENINGAU: The Government welcomes the involvement of agencies or societies in organising informative programmes especially on Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) as a proactive and effective way of disseminating information, messages and mandates to the public.

Nominated Assemblyman Loretto Padua Jr said the people needed to know more about the MA63 and that it should be documented for reference. He said the people are aware of the history of Malaysia’s birth and that the programme is aimed at reflecting on the history of Sabah’s participant in the formation of Malaysia.

He said this during the “MA63 Briefing: Our Rights, Our Land, Our Future” opening ceremony held at the Dewan Sangkawangan Sabah Handicraft Centre, here, Thursday. He said the formation of Malaysia is due to the struggle against the British Occupation, and the fight for freedom and claiming our rights. “The formation of Malaysia is also to balance the population of the Federated Malay States with the majority of the Malays, Chinese and Indians as well as those of Singapore, North Borneo (Sabah), Sarawak and Brunei to form Malaysia. “At first, Sarawak and North Borneo rejected the proposal of formation but when the treaty itself became a guarantee of self-government that allowed the agreement to be included in the idea of forming Malaysia on Jan 17, 1962, a commission was appointed to review the views of Sabah and Sarawak community known as the Cobbold Commission, resulting in MA63,” he said. Padua added that such an excellent programme to showcase the country’s holistic events involves the inclusion of the State of Sabah as a Territory that has jointly realised the establishment of Malaysia or the Federation of Malaysia. “The role of the Archives Department is for reference and to detect, identify, acquire, collect, store and preserve and subsequently maintain historical and national archives for Sabah,” he explained. The event was organised by the Sabah State Archives in collaboration with the District Office, Keningau Branch Museum, Keningau Library, Education Department and Keningau Native Courts. Also present was the State Archive Director, Majella Tan Marquez and moderator Zainal Ajamain, and District Administration Assistant Officer Edward Bungsu, among others. The event saw several questions about MA63 posed to Zainal as the moderator and received satisfactory answers.
