LABUAN: Labuan rugby fans have good reason to celebrate after their team beat favourite Sabah 17-10 to win the women’s under-20 (U20) of the National Rugby 7s Championship (National Sevens 2019) for the first time at the Ipoh Padang, Perak .

For the Labuan ruggers’ supporters, the result was exhilarating as it was a nail-biting match to the end but luck was on Labuan U20 women rugby squad to emerge the champion in the prestigious national rugby tournament.

The squad was down 0-10 in the first half but they bounced back with fighting spirit in the second half, scoring three tries in the last four minutes of the game.

That was accomplished via injured forward Nuramira Nassan who came off the bench to show the squad’s real sting, scoring the first try before Nurul Izza Khalisah Abu Samah scored another try to tie the score 10-10 with less than two minutes of play.

Nurul Izzah became the hero of the game when she crossed the line the second time at full time to clinch victory for Labuan and completed the game with 17-10 against Sabah.

Labuan squad shined on the first day by winning all its group stage opponents beating arch-enemy Sarawak 17-10, 27-0 against host team Perak and 17-0 against Terengganu.

The squad also beat Johore in the semi-final 22-10.

Labuan victory was sweeter with Jannie Peter winning the Best Player award. Labuan Men U20 team did not go home empty handed as they won third place after beating Johore 26-7 in the semi-final.

Labuan Rugby Association President Abdul Rashid Adlie said the team’s chief coach and team spirit was crucial in Labuan’s victory.

“Effective coaching where the coach focused on positive and personal relationships with the athletes had ensured our success in the game,” he said.

Labuan Rugby Association Secretary, Ahmad Effendy Abdul Razak said the game was a good exposure to the Labuan ruggers to excel more in future tournaments.
