KENINGAU: A woman claims to have been cheated by a lawyer to obtain land.Matina Lampah, 54, from Kg Layuaon, Karamatoi, Sook, said she received a call from a man claiming to be a lawyer.ADVERTISEMENT
She said the man asked if she was Matina and instructed her to go to Keningau to sign a letter from a lawyer while giving her his office address.
The next day she went to the office in Pekan Keningau about 10am and met a man who asked if she was Matina.
She replied ‘yes’ and was then given a letter written in English to sign according to her signature on her appeal letter to the Land Department.
“I thought it had something to do with my appeal case,” she said.ADVERTISEMENT
She said after signing the letter, the man told her that the letter is a declaration document and handing her a cheque worth RM5,000 before telling her that that was all.
She said she felt something amiss as she was leaving the office and immediately went to the bank to cash in the cheque. She however did not use the money for fear that it might be a syndicate.

She only realised that she has been cheated after receiving a call from the Land Department in Kota Kinabalu early August telling her to collect the cancellation receipt of her land appeal letter.
She however explained that she has never written or signed any such forms, and remained steadfast that she has and will continue with the appeal and fight for her family land.Stay up-to-date by following Daily Express’s Telegram channel.
