Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Karate Association (SKA) were crowned overall champions with a record-breaking haul at the 29th National Cadet, Junior and Under-21 Karate Championship to at Stadium MPSJ, Serdang Jaya, Selangor over the weekend.

They won a total of 19 golds, seven silvers and 14 bronzes to top the medal tally, which was way better than the seven golds, five silvers and 11 bronzes they achieved a year ago as runners-up.

In the three-day competition, Selangor Karate-Do Association, who only managed seven golds, six silvers and eight bronzes finished second, with National Sports Council in third place with four golds and one silver.

Lovelly Anne Robberth was the toast of the team in the historic feat with two individual golds (cadet individual kata & cadet kumite - 47kg).

The rest of the individual golds came from Mohd Haznil Henry (cadet individual kata), Calvin Eusebius (cadet kumite -57kg), Hayden Hansannon Suimin (cadet kumite -63kg), Muhd Danish Mirza Mohd Yamin (cadet kumite-70kg), Mohd Akid Azlan (cadet kumite -52kg), Alysheron Maunsiong (junior kumite -53kg),  Michel Michelin Linus (junior kumite -59kg), Franz Evans Fancey Sami (junior kumite +76kg), Muhd Aiman Azlan (junior kumite -68kg), Muhd Rafiuddin Faiz Razmi (junior kumite -76kg), Vellcarollyne Augustine (U-21 individual), Josvin Jase (U-21 individual kata, Pressy Misty Philip (U-21 kumite -68kg), with the junior male team kata, U21 female team kata, and U21 male team kata delivering the three team golds.

SKA President Datuk Jake Nointin who had earlier called on the athletes to give their best to make the State proud was extremely proud of their success.

“It was an excellent result for us. I think it is the first time we managed to achieve 19 gold medals. If I am not mistaken, we did once in 1990 with 12 golds in the national competition. “We are really proud of the hard work done by the coaches, official and athletes which enabled us to take the overall title. The achievement clearly indicated that the development of karate here is on the right track.

“SKA has a pool of young and talented athletes, and with committed coaches that we have, we must continue to work more on the grass roots so that there will be a constant supply of talent.

“Despite the success we have, I am sure there is still room for improvement and the athletes need to train even harder in preparation for Sukma 2020,” he said on Monday.

He also thanked the Youth and Sports Ministry, Sabah Sports Council, Sabah Sports Board as well as the parents for their support.
