TAWAU: Vessels behaving suspiciously in the country’s waters will be detained for inspection by the authorities as a preliminary step in addressing external threats, Marine Police Region 4 Sabah Commander, ACP Mohamad Pajeri Ali said.

According to him, since Sabah’s waters were exposed to cross-border crime involving maritime robbery, kidnapping and smuggling — the security forces not only saw it in terms of threats but also law enforcement.

He said this was in line with the role of the troops in safeguarding the country’s security and waters, especially sea communities, fishermen, islanders and others to keep them safe.

Therefore, he said, any suspicious movements detected would be considered an intruder either in the form of a fishery intrusion or malicious intent on the country’s waters to be safeguarded in order to defend the sovereignty of the country.

“If the investigation finds them guilty, they will be referred to the relevant department.

“If the arrests do not involve threats or malicious intent, we will contact the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and the Special Branch (SB). After confirming that there is no malicious content, we will hand it over to the relevant parties for further action, ”he said.

Mohamad Pajeri said this to a media representative following the handover of three Indonesian nationals at the office of the Consulate of the Republic of Indonesia (KRI) Tawau in Jalan Sin Onn, here, on Saturday night.

The handover ceremony of the fishermen drifted in Malaysian waters was carried out by signing of a document between him and the Chief of the Tawau KRI Consul, Sulistijo Djati Ismojo and witnessed by Liaison Officer (LO) KRI Tawau Police Commissioner (Kompol) Ahmad Fadilan.

He said the event enabled them to foster bilateral relations, in line with one of  monthly meetings between the PPM and the Indonesian Water Police (Polair) at the sea border.

He was relieved that the victims had been treated and well taken care of and that the KRI had also accepted its citizens’ in a good health, said Sulistijo.
