Draw up a new MA63, says Jeffrey

KENINGAU: Starsabah called for a new Malaysia Agreement to be drafted and passed in parliament because “the present MA63 has been corrupted from its original form and the provisions therein for Sabah and Sarawak have not been fulfilled”.

Speaking at the Oath Stone gathering here by party members and supporters on Malaysia Day (September 16), its President Datuk Dr Jeffrey G. Kitingan went through a long list of “grievances and disappointments for Sabah” following the merger in 1963.

Jeffrey, who is Keningau Member of Parliament, voiced his “deepest disappointment” that it has been a case of “jauh panggang dari api” (far from being fullfilled), that it was all a “salesman gimmick” or as expressed by Sabahans, “janji terang bulan” (empty promises, like those made by an unfaithful lover made under the full moon).

“Sabah and Sarawak have been…corrupted with gifts of positions, jobs from megaprojects, as well as subjected to the divide-and-rule strategy under the insidious politics of federalism.

“We have now eventually opened our eyes and realised that the Malaysia which we once accepted with a lot pride and with a hope that it would become our shared federation. Such a federation doesn’t exist!” he claimed.  “What we have is only Malaya, the Persekutuan Tanah Melayu created in 1957, which later was converted into Malaysia on 16th September, 1963.”

Dr Jeffrey, who is also Tambunan Assemblyman, also protested the federal government’s pressure on Sabah and Sarawak to celebrate Malaya’s independence every 31st August.

He said Sabahans everywhere are now loudly raising their voices. “After so many problems of the illegal immigrants, the Philippines’ Sabah claim, the Tanduo incident, the active pro-PTI policy of the state government which is now promoting the Sabah Temporary Pass (PSS), they are crying out without fear that Sabah is for Sabahans, and as Sabahans they are fighting for Sabah’s future.”

Dr. Jeffrey said Sabahans want the Malaysia that was promised, one of which is sharing on equal status between Malaya, Sabah and Sarawak. And as equal partner, Sabah, he said, wants “merdeka sepanjang masa” (independent for all time) as sung in the state anthem.

“The MA63 is actually an agreement between Malaya and Britain. We were only asked to sign it without any power because we were still British colonies at that time on 9th July 1963.”
