LABUAN: Sports-based events are giving a welcome push to the Labuan tourism industry, Member of Parliament Datuk Rozman Isli said, adding that such events should continue to be held.

Rozman was referring to three major events held here before Malaysia Day celebrations, namely the Labuan Bird Park Eco Marathon, Borneo Island International Big Bikers Carnival and the three-day Labuan International Kite festival which drew 14 international participants out of 34.

“I got feedback that during the duration hotels enjoyed good occupancy. Other segments of business such as taxis, eateries and duty free outlets also had smiling times,” said Rozman.

He hoped that since tourism is now a key factor for the local economy the Ministry of Federal Territories, Tourism Malaysia and Labuan Corporation would continue to provide support.

He noted that all the three events had good response and was delighted that the FT Minister Khalid Abdul Samad official announced bigger support for the second edition of the kite festival.

Rozman also recalled that during the launching of the Visit Malaysia Year 2020 campaign by Prime Minister Tun Mahathir Mohamad it was disclosed that Malaysia ranked 21 in tourist destinations last year and generated revenue of RM21.4 billion.

He said the Government had promised bigger support for the industry “and we feel that it would be justified for Labuan to also expect a bigger slice in the spending for tourism.”

Rozman said Labuan had long dwelled around 1 million visitor arrivals “if we could improve this by about 20 per cent it will be an achievement for all.”
