Kota Kinabalu: The launch of the Road Safety Education Module (PKJR) for Primary Schools is aimed at helping teachers and schools highlight and emphasise the dangers that may occur on roads.

The module is a collaborative effort between the Road Safety Department (JKJR) and the State Education Department (JPN).

State Education and Innovation Minister Datuk Dr Yusof Yacob, said the objective of the module is to improve knowledge and awareness on road safety among school children who will become future road users.

He said such effort to instil the road safety culture among students will help to produce a young generation who would be courteous and responsible when they start driving or riding their vehicles.

“Young people between the ages of 16 and 25 have recorded the highest death rate in the past 10 years, with more than 2,000 killed each year.

“The death toll in road accidents is at alarming level, hence, educating students on road safety is the best way to create more courteous, thoughtful and law abiding road users now and in the future,” he said when launching the State-level PKJR at Sabah Federal Government Administrative Complex here, Tuesday. His speech was read by Assistant Minister Jenifer Lasimbang.

Dr Yusof said the module was revised in 2016 to ensure it runs parallel with the Primary School Standard Curriculum (KSSR), involving teachers from the Ministry and the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (Miros).

“The revised module was an improvement in content, illustrations and interactivity level through the use of video, audio and animation,” he added.

Some 300 attended the launch, including teachers and pupils from primary schools in Kota Kinabalu, Penampang, Putatan, Tuaran and Papar.

Also present were Road Safety Department (Policy and Innovation) Director Ajitpal Singh a/l Santokh Singh and Deputy Director of Education Sector representing the State Education Department Director Abidin Marjan.
