Kota Kinabalu: Two Universiti Malaysia Sabah researchers, Associate Professor Dr Piakong Mohd Tuah and Dr Nur Zaida Zahari won the Semi Grand Award and Gold Medal Award at the 6th Korea Creative Invention Contest held on August 18 in Seoul.

They received the joint awards from Hong Soung-Mo, President of  Korea Invention News.

“The invention entitled LIBeM Bioaugmentation, discloses a great potential of green energy to treat oil sludge-contaminated soil by using selective single and microbial consortium LIBeM,  conducted in Aerated Static Pile (ASP-Bioreactor system),” said Dr Piakong.

“This  ASP- enhanced bioaugmentation technology involves the introduction of newly established single and consortia LIBeM formulation as a delivery technique in liquid (LIBeM-LIQ), Powder ( Lib-pow) and Capsule (LIBeM CAP) form degrading oil sludge effectively in contaminated soil by adhering to Specific Technical Procedures Protocol as the Standard Operational Procedure (SOP), ” he explained.

Dr Piakong said he and Dr Nur Zaida had always been interested in the Microbial Technology for bioaugmentation on industrial oil sludge.

“After 20 years of research on the potential of Locally Isolated Beneficial Micro Organisms (LIBeM), we are able to invent the Aerated Stated Pile (ASP) Bioreactor System, the determination of the best LIBeM formulation and delivery technique,” “Considering the marathon long and efforts poured into the research work, these awards are a recognition for one of the most stupendous and creative work of innovative invention entitled LIBeM Bioaugmentation,” Prof Piatong esaid.

“The LIBeM Bioaugmentation technology is environmentally friendly, cost effective, sustainable treatment of oil sludge listed as Scheduled Wastes (SW 311) in the Environmental Quality (Scheduled Wastes) Regulation 2005 or other related organic compounds produced by oil & gas or other related industries,” he said. “The next step is to commercialise these LIBeM products known as LIBeM-LIQ, LIBeM-POW and LIBem-CAP for treatment of oil sludge in the oil & gas industries in Malaysia,” Dr Piatong said.
