S’kan parking fee is reduced
SANDAKAN: Following discussions on the coupon parking system in this district, the Sandakan Municipal Council (SMC) has agreed to lower the monthly parking fees and exempt fees for two satellite towns - Bandar Maju and Bandar Tyng.

Deputy President of SMC, Mohd Hamsan Awang Supain, said the Council agreed to decrease the monthly parking fees from RM80 to RM50 following appeals by the public.

“Decreasing it to RM50 means the Sandakan monthly parking fee is cheaper than in Kota Kinabalu.

“It is because the collection of RM50 include the RM3 for Sales and service Tax while in KK, consumers have to pay RM53,” he said to media, Wednesday.

Hamsan said consumers who had earlier bought the RM80 monthly parking fee coupon may use it for additional 15 days after the expiry date.

“They will be able to buy the RM50 monthly parking coupon starting Oct 1.

“Apart from that, the 25 cent and 50 cent coupons will also be available Oct 1 and they can choose which to buy,” he added.

“From 11 satellite towns, now only nine will implement parking fees as these two towns had not been surrendered fully by its developers to SMC.

“Consumers in these nine satellite towns who still did not display their parking coupon will get reminder notice until Nov 1.

Starting Nov 1, the council will summon those who fail to display coupon parking fee,” he said.

Hamsan said the parking fees are not merely to obtain revenue, but create more systematic parking in this district.

“Among the benefits are it will prevent parking lots from being monopolised by certain people and for maintenance of the parking lots,” he said.
