THE Municipal Council has cleaned the drain in a Tawau neighbourhood and is considering the possibility of having this structure reconstructed to prevent the water from stagnating inside.

A spokesman for the agency said the gradient for the drain needed to be rebuilt.

“This gradient problem was brought about by the incidence of settlement and siltation over the years,” he said.

“We have stepped up efforts to clean the drain but this is not solving the problem.”

He said the Council’s Engineering Section would have to deliberate over the feasibility of rebuilding the drain.

On a complaint from a Taman Shamrock rate-payer about the lack of maintenance carried out on this structure, the spokesman refuted this claim saying that this work was cleared according to schedule.

“If need be, we even step in to perform this work even before the next routine maintenance is carried out,” he said.

“We have noticed that only a section of the drain, in front of four homes here, overflows whenever it rains heavily.”

He said the affected home-owners had since been advised to alert the Council if their compounds flooded, so that action could be taken to offer them some relief from this problem.

ANG of Tawau said the drain was clogged with weeds as it had not been cleaned in some time.

“The stench from the stagnant water in the drain is intolerable,” she said.

“I also fear that this foul water has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes.”

She said water from the drain spilled over into her front compound after only a few minutes of rain fall.

“I cannot understand how the local authorities can be turning a blind eye to these irregularities.”

Ang provided Hotline with the location of the drains in question. This information was forwarded to the Council. (SS)
