KENINGAU: Breast cancer can be prevented through awareness among women about the disease and getting early treatment, District Officer Hassan Mahali said here.

He said the disease, which is also the world’s number one killer of women, has the potential to be cured if detected early.

“Hence, the society especially women are encouraged to participate in breast cancer awareness campaigns so as to prevent cancer from (spreading) at an early stage,” he said when opening the Breast Cancer Awareness Program at Keningau Hospital here.

Hassan said it was important to combat the disease from the beginning through treatment to cure.

He said that awareness among the society, especially women, on the disease, is still low.

“The broad knowledge of the disease need to be given more serious attention by all groups as it is not only for women but also men,” he said.

Hassan said the programme is of benefit to the society as they will learn more about breast cancer and its impact on people.

He hoped that through this awareness campaign, it would open up the minds of individuals to take care of their own health as many were reluctant to undergo medical examinations.

Earlier, Director of the Keningau Hospital, Dr Loly Mealonny Geoffrey said she hoped that the programme would continue in the future as it provide an important message to the public about the disease. She said breast cancer cases showed an increase over the years, as records at the hospital showed.

“I hope that the community will always prioritise personal health by participating in this campaign as well as conducting health checks at government hospitals and health clinics,” she said.

The programme, organised by the district Puspanita in collaboration with Keningau Hospital was also attended by Puspanita Chairperson, Prof  Dr Kathy Khadizah Osman and representative from Kinabalu Pink Ribbon.
