RM20m Sabah swiftlet venture

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah’s swiftlet nest industry is expected to become an eco-tourism product following an injection of RM20 million from a China-based company via the signing of a MoU with a local company, Friday.

Syarikat Yang Zhi Gang Global (China) Sdn Bhd represented by its Chairman Chai Wei Min and Borneo Tropical Resort (BTR) Sdn Bhd represented by its Managing Director, Feizal Ajrin Karim, signed the MoU to make sure such investment initiative would have a positive impact on Sabah’s economic growth.

The Chinese company represented by Chai also signed another MoU with Sabah Swiftlet House and Bird’s Nest Industry (Swifin) Association President Datuk Karim Bujang to ensure assistance for such investment become a reality and to supply swiftlet bird nests to the company.

Chai said the company will invest about RM20 million to implement the development agenda on the swiftlet bird nest industry for the next 10 years.

It involves setting up 20 swiftlet houses every year, including building a largest processing centre for swiftlet bird nests in Sabah as well as strengthening tourism aspect of the industry.

“The initial planning of the 10-year investment is located in Kg Binsulok, Membakut, involving 100 acres currently operated by BTR Sdn Bhd.

“In addition, the collaboration will involve the tourism industry that will be integrated with the swiflet (Walit) bird nest industry.

“Therefore, we hope the partnership will receive strong support from the State Government and Swifin itself that are seen as the key agents in making this effort a success,” said Chai.   He said the upcoming investment would also bring in some 1,500 job opportunities to the local communities.

Agriculture and Food Industry Assistant Minister Dr Daud Yusof, who witnessed signing of both MoUs, said his Ministry always supported any effort to empower the industry as it could help the government to eradicate poverty in the State.

He said the ministry has come up with a number of strategic plans in collaboration with foreign investors, especially from China, as a way to help people of all levels to improve their quality of life and living standard.

“I will discuss with Swifin on how to implement this initiative and I am confident that it will make a huge contribution to the economy and interests of the people in Sabah,” he said.

Meanwhile, Karim said the spirit of honesty plays important role to ensure such cooperation to empower the swiflet bird nest industry in Sabah will be smoothly implemented because without any strong cooperation, such initiative will not be fruitful. He believed the company is capable of bringing this industry forward and most importantly contributing to the interests of the people.
