Sabah should stop all forms of illegal gambling: Chan
KOTA KINABALU: The State Government should put more effort to stop all forms of illegal gambling activities instead of just focusing on legalised slot machines, said DAP Kota Kinabalu Member of Parliament Chan Foong Hin.

He said he has no problem with the policy to stop the issuance of the slot machines trading licence, but for him it is more important to stop the illegal gambling activities which had more impact.

“This is my personal opinion, those clubs which have slot machines they have obtained the licence from the Federal (Ministry of Finance (MOF).

“But if they want to operate business in the State, they need to get their licence from the State government.

“So, what happened now is their licence from the MOF is still available but local government instruct to not continue their trading licence… which means that even though they have the MOF trading licence, but they could not operate their business here.

“For me, gambling is an entertainment but if you have been addicted to it, it could be a bad habit which could bring negative impact. Instead of banning the slot machines activity, I think it is good to stop those addicted with gambling from continuing to practise it.

“My question is, are those who operate the slot machines the ‘biggest culprit’ of gambling activities in Sabah or Malaysia? I think the biggest culprits are the illegal gambling… those are very difficult to find physically.

“The illegal gambling activities have the most negative impact on society.

“Now our challenge is if you want to ban this legal slot machines activity in club, do we have preparation?

“Or are we committed to have more determination to stop the illegal gambling?... it must come with a package,” said Chan.

He added that in order to make sure the State Government win this battle, the State Government should double efforts to bring to an end the illegal gambling activities.

Chan was speaking to reporters during the opening ceremony of the New Tech Furniture Sdn Bhd at the International Technology and Commercial Centre (ITCC), Penampang, Saturday.
