Beating dengue in S’kan and Beluran
SANDAKAN: As a proactive and comprehensive measure, the State Health Department has established a Dengue Special Task Force Committee in all districts to strengthen co-operation between agencies involved in dengue control.

For example, the Sandakan Area Health Office is encouraging public involvement in the Combi (Communication for Behavioural Impact) Volunteers programme.

State Health and People’s Wellbeing Minister Datuk Frankie Poon said this is one of the strategies advocated by sensitive and caring volunteers among the local community to implement dengue prevention activities.

“So far, there are 17 Combi volunteer teams in the Sandakan area and this number is among the highest.

“Congratulations to those who are actively involved in this Combi volunteer team. Despite being only voluntary involvement, the spirit of the volunteers as agents of changing health behaviours among the community is highly respected.

‘Therefore, I urge all communities, especially in the Sandakan area, to participate in the “1 Rumah 1 Juara” programme managed by the State Health Department and the Sandakan Area Health Office, which is a continuation of the Combi programme,” he said.

His speech was read by his political secretary, Liau Fui Fui, at the launching of the State-level “Gotong Royong Mega 2.0 Perangi Aedes” 2019 at the Flat MPS Karamunting Saturday morning.

Also present were Sandakan Area Health Officer Dr Johari Awang Besar, chief senior assistant director (vector control unit) of State Health Department, Dr Koay Teng Khoon, local leaders and residents.

Sandakan was chosen as the host for the “Gotong Royong Mega 2.0 Perangi Aedes” by State Health Department with the theme “Banteras Denggi: Bermula dengan Saya.”

Frankie said dengue fever is a public and environmental health issue that would not be impossible to deal with if we made a hundred per cent commitment.

“This can be achieved through cleaning activities such as gotong-royong and removal of potential containers for the breeding of Aedes mosquitoes, destruction of Aedes breeding places and fogging in residential areas and villages, media outlets on dengue issues and health education activities,” he added.

Meanwhile, in BELURAN, rural communities are advised to be more proactive and co-operative in eradicating dengue fever outbreaks.

Beluran Assistant District Officer cum Chairman of the Beluran District Dengue Fever and Infectious Diseases Committee, Leprus Esuvas Giswa, said preventing the spread of dengue is not confined to the District Office, Local Authorities (PBT) and the Health Department but requires the cooperation of all, especially the local communities.

“Community involvement in organising the gotong-royong programme is crucial to achieving its objectives as well as strengthening cooperation for the sake of mutual wellbeing.

“We hope the villagers in Kampung Air as well as the local folks in the Beluran district, as a whole, can fully co-operate with the local authorities, the District Office, and health officers to maintain cleanliness of their homes,” he said after leading the Beluran district-level Gotong-Royong Mega 2.0 programme 2019 in Kampung Air Beluran.
