Reviving the Inobong Tamu
PENAMPANG: Small time traders in Penampang long to do their little business in places provided for them to display their products.

Aloysia Matinggal of Kg Kibunut, Penampang, decided two months ago to little selling near the existing Kasigui shop while waiting the new ground in Inobong to be ready.  She is assisted by friend Augustina Girith of Kg Tuavon, Penampang, selling home-grown products such as wild vegetables and honey (Kelulut madu).

“Having a small plot of land at the backyard is a good thing, I always look forward to harvesting my vegetation for sale.

The bee hive is another good source of income, but it needs to wait a little longer for it to produce honey.  It can be quite sellable,” said Augustina.

They are selling at RM85 for big bottle and RM25 for small one.  She lets passers-by have a taste of the honey.

According to Moyog Assemblywoman Jenifer Lasimbang, the former Tamu ground in Inobong is no longer being used for any activities.  She said there are efforts to revive the place, but to give it time to re-structure the place for better equipped with facilities.

She intended to make the place lively and visited not only by locals but also as a tourism spot where visitors could come and enjoy the panoramic view.  There is a suspension bridge at the vicinity, allowing tourists to come and try out crossing from one end to the other.

It was understood that people living in the surrounding areas often shared fond memories about how the place was once a venue for the villagers to meet, drink their coffee, exchanged goods, people who usually patronised the place were those who came out of Sunday Mass.

Some remember the popular first “Mee Sup Pipin” first operated at the Tamu ground, but since moved out to new premises. Many were hopeful that the Inobong tamu ground would be realised once again, for the sake of bonding, having closer ties, a reminiscent of what it was in the early days and simply, a place to get together again and just enjoy nature.
