KOTA KINABALU: An 18-year-old car driver was killed while two others were injured in an accident in Donggongon, near here, Sunday morning.

Penampang Police Chief DSP Mohd Haris Ibrahim said they were notified about the incident involving a Proton Wira Aeroback about 6am.

“Initial investigation showed the driver, who was intoxicated, beat the red light before he lost control of his vehicle and hit a tree on the left shoulder of the road.

“The driver who did not own a driving licence was pronounced dead at the scene by a medical officer from the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, while the front seat passenger suffered head injuries and another passenger suffered light injuries on his right arm and leg,” he added.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Penampang Fire and Rescue Department operation commander senior officer 2, Benny Lim, said a Fire Rescue Tender (FRT) vehicle and five personnel were deployed to the scene after receiving a distress call about 5.56am.

“The two injured victims were rescued and sent to the hospital for medical treatment, while the deceased, identified as Michnathaniel Wong, was handed over to the police for further action.

“Those injured were aged 19,” he said, adding that the rescue operation ended about 7am.

Meanwhile, two people including an elderly were injured in another accident involving a Toyota Hiace and an Isuzu Invader near Queen Elizabeth Hospital 1, here, Sunday,

According to the investigating officer Sergeant Waslly Sabli, the Hiace driver was heading to Kota Kinabalu from Penampang when he was believed to have lost control before hitting the back of the Invader at 5.50pm.

“The impact caused the Invader to be pushed to the opposite lane, causing it to nearly hit a man and a woman who were at a bus stop.

“The out-of-control Hiace crashed into the road shoulder in the opposite lane before hitting and damaging a water pipe,” he said.

The 22-year-old male Hiace driver and his three passengers escaped unscathed.

The 71-year-old Invader driver also escaped unhurt, but his 68-year-old wife and 40-year-old daughter sustained injuries and were sent to the hospital for treatment.
