KOTA KINABALU: Eagles Rugby Club (ERC) captured the first Sandakan Rugby League title that concluded at the Eagles Rugby Club field in Mile 6, Sandakan, at the weekend.

They had a comfortable 51-25 win over Tawau Panthers Rugby Club 51-25 in the Cup final.

The Plate title was won by Sandakan Old Boys Rugby Club (Sobruc) who beat Green Castle Rugby Club 24-17 in the final while Boss Javanicus defeated Ligers Smart 24-0 in the Bowl finals.

Organising spokesman Ardyaffendy Mohd Arifin said a total of six teams took part in the inaugural league that started since July.

“The staging of this championship was not only to promote the game but it is also an opportunity to create a bigger pool of rugby players, not only in Sandakan but also Sabah.

“We believe the league has achieved its objectives where it had attracted a total of 480 players representing their respective teams,” he said.

Meanwhile, Sandakan Rugby Association deputy president Segaran Tan was there to present the prizes to the winners. – GL Oh
