KOTA KINABALU: Sabah’s Petronella Douny is one step closer to fulfilling her ambition to become the country’s first woman coach to hold a licence A football coaching certificate with the support of the Youth and Sports Ministry.

The former State player currently the only qualified licence B woman coach was facing difficulty to finance the course on her own.

Youth and Sports Minister Phoong Jin Zhe stepped in after learning of her plight during the recent meeting with some of the 16 State players who have been called up for the SEA Games training camp early this week.

He assured Petronella that the Ministry will provide financial assistance when the needs arise.

“I was made to understand that Petronella has been given the opportunity to take up the class A course but the cost is rather high which she can’t support by herself.

“The State government under my Ministry will lend our support to her. Actually we have grants for coaching to take courses, so I will facilitate to assist Petronella, who we are very proud of, because she has helped to produce many players to represent Malaysia,” he said.

Meanwhile, Peronella was very grateful with the support given by the Minister, and continues her effort as coach to help the State and  country in the development of the sport for women.

The Kiulu lass currently working with City Hall played for the State from 2004-2011.

She started her coaching career in 2014 as the assistant coach for the State futsal coach and also the State football team from 2014-2016 before becoming assistant national coach for the national Under-15 and Under-19 squad in 2018.
