DID steps in to clear junks in drain
THE Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) has stepped in to clear scores of junks accumulated inside the rubbish trap in the monsoon drain behind Cyber City Apartment, in Kepayan, on Oct 10.

A resident there complained to Hotline recently about the mass rubbish floating inside the structure for almost a month. “It smells awful at times,” stressed JOSEPH, the complainant, who also noticed the amount of rubbish inside the flood mitigation drain increasing by the day.

He wondered as to which authority is responsible to look after the structure as rubbish found floating in the drain is largely plastic wastes and other non-biodegradable items.

“As far as I am concerned, the drain has not been cleared for more than six months as the last time I saw a machinery scooping out the debris there was early this year,” he said.

He feared the rubbish would eventually overflow onto the nearby low-lying lands, including the nearby road, during prolonged heavy rain aggravated by high tide.

“This happened before during the recent storm which saw domestic wastes and even some decayed planks ending up scattered on the land next to the drain near the D’Junction Fun Pub,” he said.

He urged the caretaker of the structure to carry out regular cleaning of the rubbish trap at least once a week.

“I hope highlighting this issue in the newspaper will also educate litterbugs to stop treating the monsoon drain as their regular landfill,” he said.

A DID spokeswoman, when contacted, said it was well aware of the situation at that part of the structure as well.

“We’ve been getting several reports about the same issue lately. In fact, we have cleaned up it recently,” she added.

She said all monsoon drains within the city and outskirts had been serviced not too long ago.

“We will try to do it as frequent as possible,” she said, adding that bad weather usually hampered their efforts.  (OV)
