Act to give recognition to social work: UMS
KOTA KINABALU: The Social Work Professions Act, which will be tabled in Parliament in December gives due recognition to social work in Malaysia.

University Malaysia Sabah (UMS), Faculty of Education and Psychology, Social Work Programme Head, Dr Peter Voo (pic) said the Act not only recognises the same social work programmes as lawyers and doctors, but also provides opportunities for graduates to fill the need for social work services.

“This Act is necessary because social work and services are very important in addressing social challenges and issues in an increasingly demanding society, and this is a good development given that social work programmes are already well-known in developed countries such as the United States, United Kingdom and Australia.

“Public universities like UMS are also ready to assist the government in meeting human resource needs in the social work field as UMS annually produces well-trained graduates in this field.

Voo said in commenting on the statement of Deputy Prime Minister cum Minister of Women, Family and Community Development Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail in Parliament recently, on her ministry efforts to enact the Act.

He said at UMS, the Social Work programme has been around since 2004 and has produced more than 900 trained social work graduates and many of them are now serve in government hospitals and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) as social workers.

Voo hopes that the Government through the Public Service Department agency will recognise graduates of social work programme in giving priority to employment in government departments that provide social services and social welfare.

“Agencies like JKM, the Department of Women Development, and the National Population and Family Development Board are expected to support this initiative as the graduates of this programme are trained specifically to restore the social well-being of the community,” he said.
