Nine years’ jail for robbing student
KOTA KINABALU: A 43-year-old Filipino who robbed a female student of her handphone, was sentenced to nine years’ jail.

Aukasa Jonior, a IMM13 holder, pleaded guilty before Sessions Court Judge Azreena Aziz to the charge against him on Wednesday.

He robbed the 17-year-old girl on Oct 11 this year in front of a coffee shop in Manggatal.

The offence under Section 392 of the Penal Code carries a jail term of up to 14 years, on conviction.

During mitigation, Aukasa who was not represented asked for leniency saying that he has two children and old parents to look after.

However, Deputy Public Prosecutor Siti Amirah Muhammad Ali urged the court to impose a deterrent sentence on the grounds that Aukasa had robbed a school student who was waiting for a school bus at that time.

Siti Amirah added that the offence was very serious and rampant nowadays.

The court heard that the incident happened while the girl was waiting for her school bus in front of a coffee shop when an unknown man approached her  suddenly, grabbed her handphone and fled.

The girl had lodged a police report on the same day and the man later identified as Aukasa was arrested following the report.

The girl identified her handphone which was grabbed by Aukasa during the incident as well as identified Aukasa.

After completing his jail sentence, the court ordered Aukasa referred to the Immigration Department. – Cynthia D Baga
