Trio fined RM6,000 for gambling

KOTA KINABALU: Three people were fined a total of RM6,000 by the Magistrate’s Court here Wednesday for engaging in a gambling sessions two months ago.
Ng Jun Seng, 23, Joanne Yong Siew Fung, 25, and Thien Hui, 27, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Lovely Natasha Charles to committing the offence under Section 6(2) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953.

They were each ordered to pay a fine of RM2,000 or three months jail.
The charge against them stated that they were found to have gambling in a premises here at 7pm on July 24. The charge provides for a fine of up to RM5,000 or up to six months jail or both on conviction.
Unrepresented, all three requested for a lower amount of fine while the prosecution applied for a deterrent sentence due to the rampancy of the offence.
In another case, a 29-year-old man claimed trial to a charge of cheating over hotel services.

Choo Yu Ping was accused of cheating a man by making him to believe that he (Choo) had made a payment for hotel services by producing a non-exist bank slip, which induced the complainant to prepare the hotel services worth RM1,300 for three days and two nights from Oct 2 to Oct 4.
He allegedly committed the offence at Segama area here on 12.40pm on Oct 2.

Choo was charged under Section 415 of the Penal Code which is punishable under Section 417 of the same Code which carries a jail term of up to five years or fine or both on conviction. The prosecution in applying for pre-trial case management (PTCM) offered bail at RM5,000.

Counsel Gerald Chan, representing Choo informed the court that Choo was just been jailed by another Magistrate’s Court last week for four similar cases.
