Tuaran: The State Government’s recognition of the United Examination Certificate (UEC) has brought much relief to parents who want their children to sit for the exam in Sabah, said Tuaran Member of Parliament, Datuk Seri Wilfred Madius Tangau. He said this also proves that the Government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal, is very attentive to the needs of the Tiong Hua community in the State.

“Sabah is the second state in the country, after Sarawak, which gave recognition to UEC. This surely give much relief to those parents who want their children to sit for this exam,” said Tangau, who is also Deputy Chief Minister cum Trade and Industry Minister, when officiating the Children’s Day of SJK (C) Chung Hwa in Tamparuli, near here, Thursday.

Earlier, Tangau said the awareness on the importance of cleanliness should start from an early stage, especially among primary schoolchildren. He said teachers and parents need to educate children so they will have great self-discipline, including  maintaining cleanliness. “Great discipline and understanding on the importance of cleanliness should begin by not throwing rubbish indiscriminately, and this will help ensure homes, schools, public areas and the surrounding environment remain clean.

“We want the people to know that we hate litterbugs who throw rubbish indiscriminately. When there are strong discipline and understanding on the importance of maintaining cleanliness, children too can help tell litterbugs not to throw rubbish indiscriminately and help to discipline them.

“The anti-litterbug campaign should begin with children in schools,” said Tangau, who also distributed financial assistance and prizes to several golden citizens in Tamparuli town. The school’s Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) Chairman, Kapitan George Teo, Tuaran Party Warisan Division head Rakam Sijim was also present.
