Dad says on way to kid’s party when boat capsized
LAHAD DATU: The plan to attend a children’s party in school ended in tragedy for a father after his one-year-old daughter was drowned when the boat they were travelling in capsized.

The man and his daughter boarded the boat at Bungao and was heading to Sibutu at about 6pm when the incident occurred on October 22.

The father said they boarded the boat with four men and a woman for 200 pesos each. About one hour into the journey, the boat sunk and the father grabbed his daughter and hung on to a barrel.

However, the following day after the incident, the man who was in a weak state, realised that his daughter has slipped from his hold. The man said he was found by fishermen off the Merabung waters on the third day of the incident which prompted the authorities to launch the Search and Rescue (SAR) operation for other missing victim.

District Police Chief, ACP Nasri Mansor, said Friday this was what the 29-year-old man told the police.

Nasri added that following a discussion with the Marine Police Force and Maritime Rescue Coordinating Centre, the SAR operation was called off on October 29.

The Marine Police Force launched the SAR operation on October 24 to look for eight people who were reported missing following the rescue of man.

The next day, the body of a woman was found floating at Bangingod waters and another body of a man was found at Mataking waters. Both bodies were confirmed as the capsized boat victims.
