Equip students with IR 4.0 skills: Yusof
PAPAR: Educationists are reminded to play their vital role in educating and equipping students with relevant skills and knowledge to ensure they are able to cope with the Industrial Revolution 4.0 (IR 4.0).

State Education and Innovation Minister Datuk Dr Yusof Yacob (pic) said the IR 4.0 without doubt will involve more sophisticated technology and artificial intelligence (AI) that require certain skills and knowledge to operate on.

“This is where the teachers have an important role in ‘feeding’ such information to students so that they are well prepared, aside from being skilful, creative and innovative.

“In order to meet the IR 4.0 (requirement), education-based 4.0 (concept) needs to be customised across all subjects.

The integration of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (Stem) education into Steam (A for Art) demonstrates this element of importance and value as it is a fundamental pillar of the IR4.0 education system.

“Teachers need to be successful in educating and facilitating Process Decision Programme Chart (PdPc) in classrooms to ensure that results will be able to prepare students to be skilled, creative and innovative workforce.

“Through this (PdPc), it will be able to produce high quality products that can compete in the globalisation era.The key to developing these capabilities is a lifelong education that is interdisciplinary, trans-disciplinary, cross-functional, cross-industry and cross-cultural,” he said at the National Edu Cluster Fair conference at Maktab Rendah Sains Mara Kota Kinabalu, here, Saturday.

He also said there are various fields and skills that could be obtained through curricular activities in primary and secondary schools whereby these activities could enable students to acquire meaningful experience and higher understanding.

“Teachers need to implement the PdPc method according to the Malaysian culture which is in line with the Malaysian Education Development Plan 201-2025, National Transformation (TN50) and School Transformation (TN25),” he added.

In order to carry out PdPc successfully, Yusof urged teachers to be of quality by equipping themselves with the necessary skills and knowledge as well as preparedness to work with information and technology as a platform to build a lifelong learning environment.

“This feature is important given the need for teachers to innovate and act in tandem with technological advancements in (this) 21st century.

“Teachers need to have the skills and ability to bring change in education and learning at all levels of society through open-mindedness to embrace the latest thoughts and approaches in keeping with science and technology developments,” he said.

He added that the teachers’ educating quality is a vital factor which can encourage effective PdPc in school, in which they need to integrate soft skills as a cross-curriculum element in each subject.

Also present were Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) Sabah Director Suhaimi Zainuddin and MRSM Principal Gilbert Wong Kia Kiat.
