Poor upkeep of facilities at ferry terminal
THE management company for the Jesselton Point ferry terminal in the City will be asked to step up the maintenance of the toilets on the premises, including replacing the damaged and missing fixtures inside.

A City Hall spokesman said the agency’s staff inspected the toilets there, following a complaint from a visitor that many of these public amenities had fallen into a state of disrepair.

“The latches on the doors for some of the cubicles and cistern-covers for the toilets inside were missing, while the flushes for others did not work,” he said.

“There were instances where the tiles inside were missing, making the toilets look run down.”

He said the agency’s personnel also noted that mould had formed on the ceiling of many of these facilities.

“There was no doubt that the toilets were clean but, because the fixtures were either broken or discoloured, they were unpleasant to be inside.”

The spokesman said City Hall would write to the MC about improving these amenities

“The firm will be given a grace-period to attend to address these irregularities.

“A follow-up inspection will be carried out after this. Should we find that our advice has fallen on deaf ears, then further action will be taken.”

DAMIAN of Penampang bemoaned the deplorable condition of the men’s toilets at the terminal when he travelled to Labuan last month.

He said the door of the stall he used was slightly ajar as the latch was not functioning.

“To add to my discomfort, I noticed that tiles inside were either missing or discoloured,” he said.

“There was also a foul smell about the toilets which made me wonder how often these facilities were cleaned.”

On top of this, Damian noticed that the covers for the bowl and cistern were missing from many of the toilets.

He said this was not the first time he had found the cleanliness lacking at the men’s toilets there.

“I noticed this several months ago, but thought it was a one-off occurrence so I did not speak out about it.”

Damian said the poor condition of the toilets made him wonder about of the standards of hygiene practised by the company looking after the ferry terminal.

“I hope the Jesselton Point management makes it a priority to ensure that the toilets are kept spick and span at all times so that first time visitors, including overseas tourists, don’t get a negative impression of the State Capital.” (SS)
