SANDAKAN: Elopura Assemblyman Calvin Chong is calling on all minibus operators in the district to upgrade their service in line with Sandakan aim of becoming a tourist destination.

He said that the recent flight launched by Malindo and Royal Brunei Airlines in Sandakan would likely attract more tourists thus an efficient service by minibus operators is necessary.

“Looking at this opportunity, I would like to suggest that minibus operators provide cashless payment system for the convenience of the passengers. Maybe they can implement prepaid card system where commuters need only scan it when they board the minibus.

“Apart from providing convenience to both driver and passengers, it also time efficient.

“Furthermore, we are now in an digital era.  So, people who use the minibus service in Sandakan will certainly be glad to have this kind of system in place,” he said after chairing a meeting with Sandakan Mini Bus Association on Thursday.

The meeting that was held at Elopura N.45 office were also attended by Sandakan Municipal Council, Road Transport Department (RTD) and traffic police.

Calvin also suggested that minibus operators expand their service to all locations such as Bandar IJM and Cecily as residents there find it difficult to commute to town due to limited bus service servicing the route there.

Meanwhile, on his long-term planning, Calvin said he is aiming to create a free-of-charge shuttle bus in Sandakan.

“This free-of-charge shuttle bus will benefit the poor, low income worker and tourists. I hope this effort will be supported by all parties,” he said.-Winnie Kasmir
