Kota Kinabalu: Youth and Sports Minister Phoong Jin Zhe congratulated Jonathan Wong Kar Gee for winning silver in the men’s T12 category (vision impairment) at the 2019 World Para Athletics Championship in Dubai, United Arab Emirates on Thursday (Friday in Malaysia).

The 28-year-old Sabahan who clinched the gold medal at the 2019 Handisport Open World Grand Prix Para Athletics Tournament in Paris, last August, jumped a distance of 7.06 metres in his fifth attempt, for his season’s best to finish behind winner Doniyor Saliev of Uzbekistan, 2016 Rio Paralympics bronze medallist, who set a new competition record of 7.44m.

Although his effort failed to better his personal best of 7.22m,   it was good enough to pip 2016 Rio Paralympics silver medallist, Kamil Aliyev of Azerbaijan, who had to settle for bronze by posting his season best of 7.00m.

Phoong in a statement released on Friday said with the win, Jonathan has automatically booked his place in the Tokyo Paralympics next year.

He praised the hard work Jonathan has to endure to achieve the success and the example he has set for other young athletes to follow, and hopes Jonathan and the rest of the Sabah athletes will continue to shine for the country at the world stage.

He added that his Ministry will soon launch a Sabah Sports 2020-2030 Master Plan so that more world class athletes will be produced.

Meanwhile, another Sabah athlete Eddy Bernard who is in the team will only see action on Wednesday in the long jump T64 category.

Both athletes are accompanied by local coach Yee Kwok Wai for the competition that started on Thursday (November 7) until November 15.
