Driver drowns in swamp after 4WD overshoots

MIRI: A driver drowned when his four-wheel drive vehicle overshot the Pan-Borneo Highway in heavy rain and plunged into a swamp about 10m away, Saturday.
The 65-year-old Chan Pek Lam was driving his vehicle along Km 84 of the Miri-Bintulu section of the highway when it went out of control and flew off the road.

The 8am incident happened near Kg Iran, about 84km south of Miri.
Miri Fire and Rescue Department Chief Supt Law Poh Kiong said the victim was found drowned inside his submerged vehicle.
The Miri Bomba rushed a team to the site after receiving an alert from the public.
“When our team arrived, it was found that the driver was trapped inside the submerged vehicle.

“He had already drowned when our team reached him. Our personnel managed to free his body and handed it over to the police,” Law said.

Initial information indicated that the driver shot off the highway on his own, not due to any accident with another vehicle.
