MP to continue late father’s mandate for special needs kids
KOTA KINABALU: Sandakan MP Vivian Wong Shir Yee said she would continue the mandate of his late father Datuk Stephen Wong which is to help and support special needs children and also those in need.

She said among them is the setting up a special education school.

“We received many applications for special education needs and for the disadvantaged,” she said at the launching of the 2019 SK Sungai Anib III Special Education Graduation and Special Award at a hotel on Saturday.

Although the applications are not from Sandakan parliamentary constituency that Vivian represented and also areas including islands in the district, Vivian said, she will strive hard to fulfil her father’s wish.

“We take this need very seriously because it involves special education needs.

“Although I cannot fully assist with the application, I will try and assist at the same time to fulfil the mandate,” she said.

A total of 11 special students at SK Sungai Anib III who had completed their sixth year of study received their certificates from Vivian.

Meanwhile, Vivian said the school community including teachers and students should not only be seen as outstanding but should always be seen ahead of time.

“Education should also be lifelong pursuit as there is no end to the process,” she said.

She said future tasks and challenges also require all parties to work harder and more strategically.

“We need to be prepared at all times to evaluate and look at the deficiencies and weaknesses that we need to improve and at the same time learn from outstanding people.

“Efforts to achieve academic excellence also begin at home where parents are the first teachers to the children.

“Parents are also responsible for instilling appropriate values to enable their children excel and become part of the society that benefit religion, race, and nation,” she said.

“But I hope the efforts to boost education among special children will be doubled in order to provide best education for our children today and in the future,” she said.
