Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd’s (MAHB) network of airports, including Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen International Airport (SGIA) International Airport, recorded a 9.2 per cent year-on-year (y-o-y) growth to 11.7 million passengers in October 2019.

In a filing to Bursa Malaysia today, the airport operator said international and domestic passenger movements grew 11.0 per cent and 7.5 per cent y-o-y to 5.6 million and 6.1 million respectively.

On the last 12-month basis, the total MAHB network of airports registered 5.2 per cent growth with 139.2 million passengers.

“This is the highest absolute volume increase recorded (based) on 12 months comparison over the previous 12 months.

“Overall aircraft movements increased by 4.1 per cent with international and domestic aircraft movements recording an increase of 5.5 per cent and 3.2 per cent respectively over October 2018,” it said.

MAHB said airports in Malaysia registered a 10.0 per cent y-o-y growth registering 8.6 million passenger movements, with both international and domestic sectors growing 7.8 per cent and 12.3 per cent to 4.3 million passenger movements respectively.

International passenger movements for ASEAN and non-ASEAN destinations rose 8.0 per cent and 7.5 per cent to 2.2 million passengers each.

For Kuala Lumpur International Airport, the passenger movements grew 9.3 per cent y-o-y to 5.1 million passengers in October 2019, while Istanbul SGIA passenger movements registered a growth of 7.1 per cent y-o-y with 3.1 million passengers.

Malaysia’s passenger volume increased 10.0 per cent in October 2019 with strong growth both from the domestic (12.3 per cent) and international (7.8 per cent) sectors, thanks to the high increase of average load factor by 2.7 percentage points for both sectors.

For the international sector, both the absolute and percentage increase recorded was the highest for the year.

“The overall performance of passenger movements was contributed by the sustained demand for air travel supported by an increase in airlines and frequencies, as well as the addition of new routes,” MAHB added.
