TAWAU: Commanding officer of the 516 Regiment of the Territorial Army for East Coast, Brigadier General Tan Sri Datuk Dr Liew Yun Fah (JP) urged Tawau Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) to study and overcome flood problem in various residential areas in Tawau especially during rainy day.

Liew believed the problem is due to blocked drains and thus urged the department to service the drains adding that the Assemblymen for the district should be concerned on the matter and present suggestions or solutions to overcome the problem.  He said floods not only occur at Lorong Hj Zainuddin in Batu 2 but also Taman Leeka and many places in Tawau.

“There are also many social issues that need to be resolved. I hope the MP and assemblymen will pay attention to the matter as this involve the people livelihood.

“In the meantime, I also hope the Department of Irrigation and Drainage Tawau would identify and study the drainage in residential areas here and to clear it immediately if they are blocked on rainy day so as allow water flow out smoothly and thus prevent the people from having to suffer,” Liew said.

He hopes that the Water Irrigation Bureau will really study the ditch in the residential area and understand the problem. Once it is blocked, it should be dredged to let the water flow smoothly, so that the people will not suffer from it.

A resident, Madam Fong, complained that her house compound would turn into a pool whenever it rains. She said the two and a half feet-flood destroyed musical equipment in a karaoke room on the ground floor of her house.

She said that she could not sleep whenever it rains as she worry that flood might occur and that if it does, she had to wait for almost half a day for the water to recede.
