Settlers in 25-year SLDB venture
SANDAKAN:  Some 120 settlers from the Sungai Manila Scheme at Mile 12 and Ulu Dusun Scheme here took part in the replanting programme by the Sabah Land Development Board (SLDB).

They received their agreement letter from the SLDB Smallholders Affairs Unit Chief, Fauzie Jamlee, who represented its General Manager, Syaheddrul R Jodari.

The Sungai Manila and Ulu Dusun Scheme Manager, Rosli Gunsu, Sungai Sibuga Community Development Leader (PPM), Norizal Husin, the settlers’ representative, Sapar Sastro and SLDB smallholders affairs coordinator, Awang Rovelta James, were also present during the event.

The agreement covers a period of 25 years starting from 2016, said Fauzie when met later.

He said it involves altogether 262 settlers, where 242 are in the Sungai Manila scheme and the other 20 in the Ulu Dusun scheme, and an area of 1,183 hectares.

He hoped this will give economic and income opportunities to the settlers concerned.

Earlier, in his speech, he said SLDB also planned several programmes for its settlers, including the “Program Muhibbah Peneroka” organised by its Smallholders Affairs Unit with the collaboration of the plantations meant to form and strengthen ties between the settlers and SLDB.

Another one is the “Projek Aktiviti Ekonomi Tambahan” which is part of the SLDB initiatives to increase the settlers’ income through additional economic activities, in addition to RM800 per month subsistence allowance during the 42-month oil palm pre-mature period.

While for settlers who have yet to receive their land title, he said the Chief Minister had instructed SLDB to identify such settlers concerned.

He said SLDB also requested the settlers’ collaboration to inform its Estate Management Office at the schemes.

In other development, he hoped the first generation of settlers could put in the names of their children or their respective next-of-kin with their name as the second or third generation.

Meanwhile, Sapar said the settlers and SLDB jointly worked on oil palm cultivation since 2016.

He said they hopes that apart from the replanting assistance, the authorities can also give attention to their land title problem, loan for repairing their homes and other welfare-related assistance.

Norizal, in his speech, hoped the matters can be resolved accordingly for the benefits of the settlers concerned.
