Labuan’s Sikh community, though small, make an impact
LABUAN: The Sikh community is the smallest in Labuan with more than 20 families but this did not prevent them from commemorating the 550th Anniversary of their faith’s founder Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji with no less fervour.

The RM2 million 1990-built Gurdwara Sahib (Temple) was illuminated with an enchanting glow emanating from inside against the dark background creating an eye-catching sight for the three-day, celebrations which started on Sunday.

Deputy Chairman of the temple Balvir Singh said Sikhism is the 5th largest religion and its three pillars were always to remember God throughout the day, earn your livelihood through hard work and honest means and selflessly  serve and share with those especially less fortunate.

One thing unique about Sikhs is that despite modern day influences and cultural changes many still wear two of the five symbols namely the steel bangle and the turban which differentiate them from the rest of society.

Balvir said among the hallmarks of remembering the Saint’s day was to read the 1,430-page scripture non-stop for three days and serving free vegetarian food to all visitors and guests.

He was proud that though Sikhs make up a small community, the temple is often active with various events and the birthday of all Sikh saints are celebrated.
