All teachers to partake in English immersion scheme
SANDAKAN: Highly Immersive Programme (HIP) carnival is an effort to bring education into the next level by encouraging the use of English language in five keys areas.

Sabah Education Director Dr Mistrine Radin said HIP was introduced in 2016 and several schools were selected to carry it out.

In 2018, it became compulsory in all education institutions under the Ministry.

“This is aligned with HIP objectives that encourages the use of English in five keys areas which are creating a highly immersive surrounding in promoting the use of English, promoting English language use among school staff, increasing the percentage of students’ involvement in English activities and encouraging parents and community in taking part in the students’ learning.

“This effort to leverage English should be continuous to encourage everyone to be well versed in English by ensuring our students will be able to use English not only in the classroom but also beyond.

“This is a necessary for the students to be able to communicate in English for them to be prepared in the real world,” she said.

Her speech was delivered by Sabah English Language Officer Muarifin Sufian Mochoeri at the launching ceremony of “HIP Carnival: Sharing Best Practices” at SMK Merpati hall on Wednesday.

Some 20 secondary schools and 59 primary schools around Sandakan, Beluran, Telupid and Kinabatangan participated in the carnival.

Mistrine congratulated the Sandakan District Education Department for organising this event and providing a platform for schools’ administrators, teachers, staff, students and even society to share their best practices in highly immersive programme in schools.

“All of these will not be possible if all the stakeholders did not play their roles. School administrators are the main drivers in ensuring HIP is carried out following the guidelines and made possible according to plan.

“As for teachers, we need to scrap out the idea of HIP only be done by English teachers. All teachers need to be part of HIP in schools in order to promote the language and this is what we call a whole school approach.

“The most important stake holder is our students. Students need to make sure themselves able to be proficient in the language and participate the activities. Thus, they will be able to self-access their learning in the language,” she added.

Also present were, Sandakan District Education officer Sh.Mahada Sh.Attar, and Elopura Assemblyman Calvin Chong.
