‘Good news’ in 2020 Sabah Budget
TAWAU: Sabahans can expect “good news” in the 2020 State Budget to be tabled at the State Legislative Assembly today (Friday), said Finance Assistant Minister Sarifuddin Hata.

“The Budget is created based on the wellbeing of the people, in line with the Government’s aspiration and effort to develop the State,” he said after launching the municipal-level Maulidur Rasul celebration at the Tawua Community Hall, here, Thursday.

“The 2020 State Budget is expected to bring good news to the people, but it is better for the Chief Minister to announce it himself tomorrow (Friday).”

He expects infrastructure and entrepreneurship to be one of the fields that would be given special emphasis in next year’s Budget.

Last year, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal had tabled a RM4.27 billion budget for 2019 with a surplus of RM105.32 million.

The surplus involved an increase of RM40.43 million or equivalent to 62.31 per cent compared to 2018.

During the tabling, Shafie, who is also Finance Minister, said the State revenue collection for this year was expected to reach RM4.27 billion, with a total expenditure allocation of RM4.16 billion. He also expected the State’s economy to grow positively by five to six per cent this year.

The encouraging performance of Sabah’s economy, he said, was contributed by the positive growth of the key sectors, with the services sector remaining as the largest contributor by accounting for 39.9 per cent of the State’s GDP in 2017.

Sabah’s income per capita has also increased to RM23,979 in 2017 from RM21,086 in 2016.

Meanwhile, about 2,000 people attended the celebration, which included a 2km procession from the Tawau Municipal Council compound to the hall.

Aside from banner and the best contingent competitions, there was also a talk by Mohamed Ashrul Tarmizi Saleng.

Sarifuddin was pleased to note the participation of many youths in the programme.

“Their involvement is a testament of their awareness on their responsibility to propagate Islam in Sabah, especially Tawau,” he said in his speech.
