Two women loan sharks arrested
LABUAN: Two women were nabbed after an illegal money-lending (‘ah long’) syndicate was busted by Labuan police, here, Wednesday.

Labuan Police Chief Supt Farid Ahmad said a team from the Commercial Crime Division raided a house at Taman Mutiara, Sungai Bedaun around 3pm after receiving a tip-off.

Farid said log books containing the records of debtors were also seized during the raid and brought to the station for further investigation.

The two suspects, a local woman and a documented Filipina immigrant, who were identified as the operators, have been remanded beginning Thursday to assist investigations.

The case will be investigated under Section 5(2) of the Moneylenders Act 1951 which carries a fine of not less than RM250,000 or jail for maximum of five years or both if convicted.

Farid urged the public to come forward if they have information pertaining to money-lending syndicates. He also disclosed that there are only five licensed moneylenders in Labuan.

He advised the public to stay away from money-lending syndicates which could threaten them and their families. – Iffah Dilaney
