Cheongsam should not be ‘showy’: Umno MP
Kuala Lumpur: Clothes, and how they should be worn by women, came up again in the Dewan Rakyat, with an Umno MP saying dresses worn by artistes should showcase “values of Eastern women”.

Mastura Mohd Yazid (Umno-Kuala Kangsar) (pic) said the cheongsam, for example, should not be “showy” and should be properly worn.

She said this when debating the allocations for the tourism minister under the 2020 Budget.

Saying she had been told that the National Culture Policy was being amended by the government, Mastura said the policy should celebrate the various cultures in the country.

At the same time, she said it should insist on “good values”. For instance, there should be guidelines on the attire of artistes so that it gives the “right message”.

“The songket should be worn correctly. And the cheongsam, it should be worn properly, too. It shouldn’t look garish or showy. It should display the values of Eastern women.”

She also wanted to know what sort of accessories these artistes would be allowed to wear and the type of dances that would be included in the policy guidelines.

Mastura said there should be clear standard operating procedures so that “the right culture of this country” would be showcased to the world.

In the past, too, some MPs had raised the issue of clothes, especially that worn by women.

Che Abdullah Mat Nawi (PAS-Tumpat) had in August last year, for instance, spoken about the uniforms of Malaysian flight attendants being too revealing. –FMT
