Another pygmy elephant found dead in Kinabatangan

Kota Kinabalu: Another pygmy elephant was found dead in Sukau, Kinabatangan, it was reported Saturday.

An autopsy by the Wildlife Department is currently underway on the carcass.

"The autopsy is still being done. I have no further information but it is true that a dead elephant was found in Sukau,” Borneo Today quoted a source as saying.

Wildlife Director Augustine Tuuga confirmed the matter.

"I am still waiting for a report from the investigating team," he said.

The latest discovery of the protected animal’s carcass is the fourth in less than two months.

On Sept 25, the carcass of a pygmy elephant was found in Udin River, Kalabakan with 70 gunshot wounds.

Later, on October 20, a rotten carcass was found at a farm in Beluran with six suspected poachers arrested to assist in the investigation in both cases.

On November 3, the carcass of a pygmy elephant was found floating upstream of Kinabatangan River with its feet cut off.
