RM150,000 boost for Labuan sports

LABUAN: An allocation of RM150,000 from the Federal Territories Ministry will be channelled to fifteen sports associations in Labuan to boost the local sports development.
Federal Territories Minister Khalid Abdul Samad said the funds presented to the associations will help replace worn-out equipment and upgrading existing facilities for the benefit of local athletes.

“With the funds given, local athletes can focus on training and strengthening their skills with quality equipment in a more conducive environment.
“This initiative, which is in line with the Federal Territories Sports Council Strategic Plan 2019-2023, will produce more talented and competitive athletes who can contribute greatly to the sports achievements of the Federal Territories,” he said during the Sports Talent Carnival 2019 here on Saturday.
Khalid hoped that with the funds provided, sports associations in Labuan will be more active in polishing local talents and accelerating sports development in the island.
The associations which received RM10,000 each were the Labuan Rugby Association, Labuan Aquatic Association, Labuan Silat Association, Labuan Swimming Association, Labuan Athletics Association, Labuan Wushu Association, and Labuan Lawn Ball Association.

Other recipients were the Labuan Football Association, Labuan Volleyball Association, Labuan Badminton Association and Labuan Amateur Athletic Association.
Khalid said the maiden Sports Talent Carnival was the Council’s effort to provide competitive opportunities and exposure to athletes here to showcase their skills.

“The Carnival can also serve as a platform to identify talent and potential of young local athletes to represent the Federal Territories team in next year’s Sukma Games at Johor in July 2020.

The two-day Sports Talent Carnival will contest six sporting events namely lawn bowl, beach volleyball, athletics, petanque, badminton and e-sports.
The Carnival also received support from Labuan Corporation, Labuan Youth and Sports Department, Labuan sport associations and NGOs.
