KENINGAU: Non-governmental organisation (NGO) Angkatan Perpaduan Sabah (APS) urged the Home Ministry to scrutinise the backgrounds of Permanent Residents in the State, especially Filipinos.
Its vice-president Paul Kadau (pic) said, such inspection is important, especially with the increasing crime cases, recently, involving permanent residents.

Citing a recent news report on a snatch theft case which involved a Filipino permanent resident at a shopping mall in Kota Kinabalu, Paul said APS is concerned with such cases.
“It is worrying especially when the suspects are permanent residents who had declared as having a good character and verified by the government prior to the issuance of permanent residency,” he said.
“How many of these permanent residents are Filipinos and how can the government be sure that they will continue to behave well?
“Or are they using the permanent residency as a way to continue staying in the country without contributing anything to the nation?” He claimed many had contacted APS regarding this.

“Our duty is to voice it out to the government, especially the Home Ministry, so that they can investigate this matter or make the approval for permanent residency stricter,” he said.
