Patrons risk tripping at Damai walkway
A concerned member of the public has voiced out his fear about the potential hazard posed to unsuspecting pedestrians while walking along the open air section of a restaurant in Damai commercial centre in Luyang.

“I twisted my foot after falling on the walkway as I didn’t notice there is a drop about five inches on the walkway,” stressed CHARLS, who was there on Nov 6.

He said the changes in the walkway elevation in that area should not be taken lightly by the eatery management or the City Hall as it will cause injuries to the hands, elbows, shoulders, head or knees of those who are unaware of it.

“I think the situation won’t be so bad if the colour of the tiles at the elevated area are not similar with the ones at the lower floor as pedestrians may be able to notice it if the two sections have different colours,” he added.

He said the walking surfaces in that area must be reconstructed to prevent anyone from tripping because of it.

“There was a small cut on my toe and still hurting at the moment,” he said, adding that similar accident may befall to anyone.

Apart from providing different tiles colour, he said another alternative will be attaching a visible warning notice or red and white strip along the edge of the drop tiles.

“I noticed a restaurant at Jalan Gaya in the city has done this at their premises which enable pedestrians to know the change of floor level in that area with ease,” he added.

He said any of these solutions must be carried out soon as possible to prevent anyone from getting hurt as the substantial drop in question can cause serious injury to senior citizen, pregnant ladies or even young children.

A City Hall spokeswoman, when contacted recently, assured that its official at the relevant department would be asked to check on the matter soon as possible.

“Allow us to check on it first before we can come up with the best solution,” she added. Hotline would follow up on this case again later.   (OV)
